New vegan eatery Jackfruit Cafe opened last month inside King’s Donuts in Los Angeles. The shop—the motto of which is “eat like you love yourself”—serves a variety of jackfruit-based dishes, including wraps filled with jackfruit pulled “pork,” jackfruit burritos, flautas with jackfruit and sweet potatoes, and a jackfruit soul platter—which features rice, cabbage, beans, and pasta served with a choice of barbecue, vindaloo, jerk, or curry sauces. Cauliflower-based “chicken” bowls, chickpea meatloaf, and smoothies round out the menu at Jackfruit. The eatery’s founder Angela Means Kaaya—mother of NFL quarterback Brad Kaaya of the Detroit Lions—opened the café to promote her vision of a better world. “Raising livestock is destroying our environment,” Kaaya stated in a recent blog post. “We need more vegans and more vegan leadership to set the example of good health and sustainability.”
