Animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will host its inaugural “Food Fight” event on November 4 in Los Angeles. The event will pit local chefs against each other to create their versions of the classic Mexican dish chilaquiles—fried tortilla chips simmered in salsa often consumed for breakfast. The event will be hosted by Patricia De León and feature surprise celebrity judges, while participating restaurants include Doomie’s Next Mex, Kitchen Mouse, Mama’s International Tamales, Taqueria La Venganza, and SEÑOREATA. Guests and judges will choose a winning competitor who will be awarded the title of the “Best Vegan Chilaquiles in Los Angeles.” Other treats at the event include pan de muerto from HERS Bakery and vegan horchata from Mama’s International Tamales. “We wanted to do something in celebration of Dia de los Muertos,” PETA special events manager Andrea Adelman told VegNews. “PETA Latino thought about all the delicious Mexican foods out there and landed on chilaquiles.” PETA will host future food competitions with possible themes including tacos, dim sum, ramen, hot dogs, and ice cream.
