Animal-rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) released this week the findings of its nine-month undercover investigation at national turkey distributor Norbest, LLC in Moroni, UT. While the company—one of the largest turkey producers in the world—claims it adheres to humane practices, investigators found turkeys engaging in cannibalism due to stress and close confinement, animals with broken legs, and many birds displaying illnesses such as tumors on their faces. “Consumers expect grassy pastures and happy birds,” DxE lead investigator Wayne Hsiung said, “but what they’re getting for Thanksgiving is torture, disease and violence. The turkey industry’s practices are inherently cruel.” DxE plans demonstrations nationwide to raise awareness regarding the 46 million turkeys slaughtered for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
