Search engine Google released this week its Year in Search 2017 report in Canada, which revealed that “plant based diet” was the second most-searched dietary term in the country, with a growing number of users looking for vegan recipes for traditional comfort foods. Alexandra Hunnings Klein, Google Canada trends expert, said that searches for vegan recipes were more popular than ever in 2017. “Since 2004,” Hunnings Klein said, “which is as far back as we’re able to go when we look at these trends, searches for veganism peaked this summer in Canada.” The 10 most popular vegan recipe search terms for the year were macaroni and cheese, lasagna, pizza, gravy, ice cream, brownies, burger, chocolate cake, protein powder, and chili. Australia experienced a similar surge in searches, with the term “vegan” being the top dietary term searched on Google in 2016.
