Vegan Tomato-Tuna Sushi Debuts at Canadian Poké Bar

Ocean Hugger Foods' vegan ahimi sushi expands to Canada by way of Vancouver's Westcoast Poké bar.

Vegan seafood company Ocean Hugger Foods’ tomato-based tuna made its debut in Canada this week on the menu of fish-centric eatery Westcoast Poké. The vegan sushi—called “ahimi”—is made with a combination of only five ingredients: tomatoes, soy sauce, sesame oil, water, and sugar. Westcoast Poké co-founder Zachary Cho said the new menu item is receiving rave reviews. “It still has umami,” Cho said. “When I first tried it, it blew my mind how realistic it was. If I didn’t tell you (it wasn’t tuna), and gave you a poke bowl, you would never know. Even people who aren’t vegan or vegetarian will love it.” Ahimi first debuted in the United States last year on the menu of New York City-based chain Fresh and Co. before expanding to the sushi cases of select Whole Foods Markets in September. To further its mission of replacing fish with plant-based foods, Ocean Hugger Foods plans to launch several vegan fish alternatives early next year, including carrot-based salmon (“sakimi”) and eggplant-based eel (“unami”).
