New vegan restaurant Sweet Soulfood opened last week in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans. On opening day, the cafeteria-style eatery sold out of their soul food-inspired rotating menu which includes dishes such as jambalaya, smothered okra, barbecue cauliflower, and desserts. Sweet Soulfood promptly reopened for service and invited customers to dine at their salad bar, hot bar, and ice cream bar. Sweet Soulfood initially operated as a local catering business where it sold dishes such as macaroni and cheese, stuffed peppers, and sweet potato pie at events and festivals. As further proof that vegan food is in high demand, vegan shop Misfits Doughnuts and Treats opened in Rochester, NY last year and sold out of its treats—which include strawberry sriracha-filled and Fruity Pebble-topped doughnuts—in approximately three hours.
