Last Thursday, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) President Wayne Pacelle testified before Congress regarding the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. The hearing continued an animal-welfare dialogue that HSUS initiated with the US House in 2008 after an HSUS undercover investigation at a California factory farm revealed negligence and abuse of animals. During Thursday’s follow-up hearing, Pacelle testified about several new HSUS undercover investigations that further demonstrate animal abuse committed in some of the nation’s largest factory farms, including an exposé filmed at a Vermont farm that gained national attention. Pacelle proposed specific welfare policy changes and reforms to lessen such instances of animal suffering.
