Yesterday, Freshway Foods based in Syndney, Ohio, announced a recall of its bagged, grab-and-go romaine lettuce in 23 states and the District of Columbia. The recall was initiated after New York public health officials traced 12 cases of E. coli back to a bag of Freshway Foods romaine lettuce. Currently, 19 cases of the illness across the country have been linked to the company’s bagged greens. In its recall announcement, Freshway Foods said the lettuce was sold to wholesalers, food service outlets, and in-store salad bars and delis. In 2006, leafy greens were recalled due to an E. coli outbreak caused by factory-farm runoff onto spinach.
