Later this year, the front of many packaged food items will display “Nutrition Key” labels. The voluntary label, made by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Association independent of the FDA, will feature information like calorie, fat, and sugar content, as well as information the manufacturer deems beneficial, such as vitamins and protein. The label’s creators said that First Lady Michelle Obama served as the catalyst for the new label. “We would not be here today if she had not defined the common objective,” says Pamela Bailey, President and CEO of the Grocery Manufacturers Association. The First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative hopes to rid the US of childhood obesity within a generation.
