Salmonella Contamination
Salmonella is found in a Minnesota milk plant during a federal inspection.
Milk powder from a Grade B dairy plant in Winthrop, Minnesota tested positive for Salmonella S in a test conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Grade B milk is used for cheese, while Grade A is sold for direct consumption. While the FDA could not determine the exact source of the contamination, they did find a number of other violations during the inspection, including incorrectly sanitized equipment and food contact surfaces, as well as the failure of employees to wash and sanitize their hands adequately. There have not yet been any reports of illness due to the contamination.
