Five grocers in the UK, including two of the country’s largest chains, have demanded that closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems be installed and monitored at all slaughterhouses that provide them with meat, in an effort to reassure customers of humane treatment. This announcement follows an undercover investigation from the charity Animal Aid, which exposed brutality in UK slaughterhouses. Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid, says of the announcement, “Supermarkets are seeing which way their bread is buttered. Their customers want it.” The slaughterhouses have since said measures have been taken to improve animal safety, including installing CCTV systems and retraining staff in responsible animal handling.
