New York Antibiotics Bill

A New York congresswoman has reintroduced a bill to limit antibiotic use in healthy livestock.

A bill to reduce antibiotics used on factory-farm animals will soon start making its way through Congress. Reintroduced by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) seeks to limit the use of antibiotics for non-therapeutic use. “When we go to the grocery store to pick up dinner, we should be able to buy our food without worrying that eating it will expose our family to potentially deadly bacteria that will no longer respond to our medical treatments,” Slaughter says. According to the FDA, around 80 percent of the antibiotics used in the US are for farm animals.
