An Oregon bill calling for larger cages for egg-laying hens is one step away from becoming law.

Earlier this week, the Oregon state House passed a bill improving the conditions of egg-laying hens. The bill, which received bi-partisan support, gives each egg-laying hen an additional 116 square inches of space, about two-thirds more than each hen had previously. Both hens on Oregon farms and any hen whose eggs are sold in the state will have to comply with the new measures. The bill is currently headed to Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber’s desk to be signed into law.
