Joining the ranks of big cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles, Montgomery County, MD officials signed a proclamation in support of the Meatless Mondays movement, recognizing the environmental, animal-welfare, and health benefits of abstaining from eating meat at least one day a week. The endorsement came as a result of animal-rights organization Compassion Over Killings’ advocacy work and partnership with the Montgomery County Council on the nationwide initiative to foster healthier and more compassionate eating habits. “Meatless Monday is a terrific way to highlight not only the health benefits of a plant-based diet but the fact that such a diet has been shown to use fewer resources and cause less pollution,” shares county councilmember Valerie Ervin.
