Final Grateful Dead Concert to Serve Vegan Food

Famed band says farewell this weekend with heartfelt goodbyes—and veggie dogs.

This weekend, beloved band the Grateful Dead will bid adieu with three farewell performances at Chicago's Soldier Field. And this means great news for vegans, as all venue concessions (including suites) will be offering vegan food. How did this happen? Thirty years ago, Farm Sanctuary co-founder, Gene Baur, would buy cans of veggie dogs and sell them at Grateful Dead concerts as a way to promote cruelty-free living. So when he heard about the famed band’s final performances in Chicago, he contacted Aramark—the venue's food management service—to arrange a vegan menu to live up to his nickname as “the guy with the veggie dog stand.” As a result, Deadheads will enjoy veggie dogs, meat-free burgers, assorted salads, fruit, and vegan snacks while paying their final respects to the legendary musicians.
