New Study: Vegan Diets Safe for Pregnancy

Study suggests that vegan diets have no significant effect on mothers or babies during pregnancy.

A recent National Public Radio (NPR) story by University of California, Berkeley professor Tania Lombrozo discusses a study that suggests a vegan diet is acceptable for pregnant women. Herself a vegan mother, Lombrozo found research conducted earlier this year that aggregated and analyzed 262 full texts available on the topic. The report found that vegan diets have no significant effects on mothers during pregnancy or babies at birth. While research on the topic is limited, the study concluded that “pregnancy isn’t a reason to reconsider” a vegan diet. Celebrities like Bones' actress Emily Deschanel, Clueless star Alicia Silverstone, and The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik all had healthy vegan pregnancies and babies.
