New Jersey State Senator (and longtime vegan) Cory Booker appeared on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Monday to discuss his new book, his political career and aspirations, and his interaction with a Republican presidential candidate. “I’ve heard stories of you being one of the most affable people,” Noah said. “I heard you even talked to Ted Cruz.” Booker took the joke in stride, saying, “You recognize that your differences matter, but your country matters more, and you don’t demonize each other.” The still-mystified host then challenged Booker to say nice things about Ted Cruz, to which Booker responded, “Ted Cruz married a vegetarian—I’m a vegan. I like that,” which drew cheers and applause from the audience. In addition to his book appearances, Booker has also been in the spotlight recently campaigning alongside Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Bombarded daily with tweets inquiring about the possibility of a role as Clinton’s “VP,” Booker responded to one user, tweeting “I’m already her Vegan Pal.”
