PETA to Offer Prince’s Vegan Song as a Free Download

Late artist donated the song “Animal Kingdom” to PETA, and the animal-rights organization is now making it free for fans to download in commemoration of his advocacy.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently announced that it would be offering the pro-vegan song “Animal Kingdom,” by late music icon Prince, as a free download to celebrate the artist’s upcoming birthday and his animal activism. Fans are still mourning the loss of Prince, who died in April, with tributes to some of his most beloved songs, but the 1998 “Animal Kingdom”—featured on a bonus album included with the Crystal Ball disc set—isn’t among the most well-known. However, with this announcement, millions will now have access to an elusive piece of work by a music legend espousing the merits of giving consideration to animal life. Lyrics to the song—the rights to which were donated to PETA in 1999—include a compelling chorus: “No member of the animal kingdom nurses past maturity/No member of the animal kingdom ever did a thing to me/It’s why I don’t eat red meat or white fish/Don’t give me no blue cheese/We’re all members of the animal kingdom/Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea.”
