**News Snips: All the New Veggie Buzz**

Fruits and Veggies May Lessen Chance of Arthritis
A study by Dr. Alan J. Silman, from The University of Manchester in the UK, suggests that some cartenoids, antioxidants responsible for the yellow and orange coloration of produce, may cut the risk of developing arthritis. Their research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compares 176 healthy subjects to 88 who developed the condition over a eight-year span. The healthy folk took in 20 to 40 percent more beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin. You can find these antioxidants in:

Pumpkin
Papayas
Carrots
Oranges
Spinach
Kale
Collard greens
Corn
Tangerines
Nectarines
Peaches

Greener Schools
In the Big Apple this fall? The New York Coalition for Healthy School Lunches will be holding its autumn fundraiser at the Art Studio of Peter Max on Tuesday, October 11, from 6:30 to 9 pm. Tickets are $100 each. Contact Amie at amie@healthylunches.org if you’d like to find out more, or call 631-286-8720.

The NYCHSL advocates for healthy school foods in New York State. They want optional healthy plant-based entrées in schools, as well as a host of other changes. Learn more at healthylunches.org.

Karen Dawn in the LA Times
On August 13, DawnWatch.com founder and AR activist Karen Dawn wrote an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times letting the dairy industry know exactly what she thinks. Dawn debunks the numerous advertising campaigns promising that more of the white will shrink your waistline, then explores the link between veganism and a lowered risk of prostate cancer. She also makes a solid point about the connection between dairy cows and pollution. Finally, she divulges that government enjoys exemption from fair advertising laws. Read the juicy op-ed in its entirety at dawnwatch.com.

The Drama Continues: Cage-Free Eggs Controversy
The plot has thickened in The Humane Society of the United State's aggressive campaign encouraging natural foods chains to discontinue the sale of eggs from caged hens. HSUS has convinced retailer Earth Fare to do just that. The chain of health food stores spans North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia with 13 locations. Of the four million eggs it sells each year, none of them will come from from this unacceptable practice. Accroding to Earth Fare President Mike Cianciarulo, "Because of our commitment to corporate responsibility and the humane treatment of animals, Earth Fare is proud to have a policy against the sale of eggs from caged birds."

Several universities have also jumped on board against this practice, including George Washington University, Marist College, Vassar College, University of Arizona, University of Connecticut, American University, and University of Rochester.

**Make Your Dollars Count: Care What You Wear**

Those who support organic farming will find it interesting that cotton crops account for nearly twenty-five percent of the pesticides used in this country. That said, isn't it time to start investing in organic cotton?

The Sustainable Cotton Project spearheads a Care What You Wear Campaign, which educates consumers about how to get in on non-toxic, fair-trade, sweatshop-free threads. A ton of online shops offer up the best in apparel, linens and more of this classic fabric. Some of our favorites include:

sweetgrassfibers.com
bluecanoe.com
rawganique.com
underthecanopy.com

Why not support that small sector of growers, manufacturers and suppliers answering the call to clean cotton grown without exploitation of the land and its workers? Make your dollars count.

**Recipe: Raw Strawberry Soft Serve**

1-1/4 pounds fresh strawberries, hulled
1 cup young coconut water
1/2 cup raw cashews or cashew pieces
3/4 organic pitted honey dates

1. Run the strawberries through a juicer to make 2 cups of juice.

2. Combine the coconut water and cashews in a blender and process on high for at least one minute or until silky smooth. Gradually add the strawberry juice and dates and blend until smooth. Place the blender in the freezer for 40 minutes to 1 hour or in the refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour or up to overnight.

3. Once the mixture is well-chilled, pour into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions. Serve immediately or transfer to an airtight container and store in the freezer until ready to serve.

**Veg Musician: Fiona Apple's New Album Freed At Last**

In the July/August issue of VegNews Magazine, we reported that fans of vegan Fiona Apple have campaigned for the past two years to have her new album, Extraordinary Machine, released. Sony Corporation withheld release of the album because it didn't possess enough mainstream draw. This spawned the infamous Free Fiona campaign, in which relentless fans sent thousands of apples to Sony Corporation.

On August 15, news broke that Epic Records will finally unleash the album October 4, 2005. The album, produced by none other than Brian Kehew (Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent), contains 12 new tracks.
