Broccoli Banishes Prostate Cancer
A recent study by The National Cancer Institute has shown that a healthy intake of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower can help fight agressive prostate cancer tumors. As reported by the BBC, the study states that although fruit and vegetable consumption has long been associated with decreased cancer risk, previous studies had been inconclusive. The new information about broccoli should come as good news to the aging male population, except maybe for George H. W. Bush.
Alcohol Gets Healthy
Okay, it's still not actually good for you to consume a large quantity of alcohol, but a new trend emerging in popular bars can make your late-night libations a little less lethal. Instead of concocting the high-sugar, syrupy fruit drinks that can turn even the sternest businessman into a large-crystal-sugar rimmed, pink-mouthed freakshow, bartenders are turning to their blenders, vegetables in hand. The New York Times reports that increasingly, blended organic veggies are the drink of choice, and there are even liquors made from popular antioxidant sources like the açaí berry. Whether this is just greenwashing of another vice industry or not, it's nice to see actual vegetables make the headlines.
Vegansexuals Sprouting Up in New Zealand
We're all the same on the inside, right? Wrong, says a group of vegans in New Zealand who have been coined "vegansexuals" by the New Zealand Centre for Human and Animal Studies at Canterbury University. The term applies to vegans who will only mate with other vegans. This selectiveness ensures that no animal products are inadvertently comsumed when the relationship gets consummated. The Kiwi news site Stuff has the whole story here. While it may seem perfectly natural for people to be more attracted to those who share their beliefs and values, but researchers say that the vegansexual reasoningnot wanting to injest animal products in any formis a new development in bedroom relations.

What Would Jesus Pasteurize?
Raw foodists may be at a loss for almonds come March 1, 2008. A new piece of legislation passed by the Almond Board of California, originally scheduled to go into effect on September 1, 2007, will require all almonds to be pasteurized due to two incidences of salmonella poisoning associated with raw almonds in the past five years. While neither case was related to organic almonds, the Board has decided to unilaterally pasteurize almonds. As California is the only almond-producing state in the US, this rule will essentially cut off the supply of raw, organic almonds.
What's more interesting than the rule itself is the response that the group "What Would Jesus Pasteurize?" has put forth, claiming that the ban on totally raw, organic almonds is an infringement on the right to religion for those who consider themselves followers of the Essene teachings. These followers believe that Jesus was a raw foodist, and included in his teachings instructions that food should not be cooked.
Let's Play Spot the VegNews!
Break out your reading glasses. It's time to play everyone's favorite news-media-related game, How Many Times Can You Spot VegNews? Here is a link to a video clip from a recent story that ran on NBC's local affiliate in Washington, DC. The segment "Going Green" focused on the growing trend of vegan eateries in the greater metro area, and specifically highlighted the popular veg lunch spot, Java Green. Check out the pro-veggie piece and see if you can spot a certain magazine that we all know and love!
Pink, Shockingly Not Sheepish
Have you heard of Pink? This little lady is usually so restrained and demure, the picture of self-control. Okay, you're right, that was a lie. Brazen, beautiful, and ballsy are much more accurate adjectives for PETA's new spokeslady. In this graphic video, Pink decries the mistreatment of sheep, especially Merino sheep, by Australia's wool producers. Warning, do not watch before lunch. (Read more about Merino wool in our Sept+Oct Fashion issue!)

Skinny Bitch Media Blitz
Seriously, get out of this Skinny Bitch's way. Last month, as you may recall, VN columnist Rory Freedman and co-author Kim Barnouin's book hit #4 on The New York Times' bestseller list. This month, Freedman conquers TV Land. With appearances on CBS's "Entertainment Tonight" on August 2, and NBC's "The Today Show" on August 6, Freedman is officially on her way to total world media domination. Getting out the message that it's easy to be skinny and healthy when you don't fill your body with junk food like meat and dairy is a snap when the advice comes from someone as smart and charming as our very own Skinny Bitch. Keep an eye out for two new books from Freedman to hit shelves in the near future!
Recipe: Barley Salad with Tomatoes & Mint
While Chef Ben Adams may be better known for his dessertshe was the head baker at Sticky Fingers Bakery in Washington, DC, for four yearshis savory dishes are no less divine. Now working as a personal chef in New York City, Chef Ben brings his talents and teachings into the homes of a vast array of clients. This month he brings us a perfect end-of-summer meal: a supple barley salad bursting with cherry tomatoes and fresh green mint.
What you need
To Cook the Barley:
3 quarts (12 cups) water
Generous pinch of salt
2 cups pearled barley
For the Salad:
2 lemons, including zest
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup olive oil
3 cloves garlic
1 large bunch mint
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1. Bring water to a boil and add salt. Add barley to water and boil for 35 to 40 minutes. Remove barley with a strainer and set aside to cool.
2. Wash lemons, remove zest with your favorite zesting tool, and juice into a large bowl. Add salt and zest to juice, and drizzle in olive oil while whisking.
3. Mince garlic and rub with a small pinch of salt to sweat. Add to dressing along with mint and pepper. Whisk thoroughly.
4. Add tomatoes to bowl and stir. Follow with cooled barley, coating grain in dressing.
5. Cover bowl and place in refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes before serving.

Product Review: Genisoy Soy Crisps Apple Cinnamon

"Better tasting than rice cakes" may seem like damning with faint praise, but it's the best way to describe the pleasant, unobtrusive crunch of Genisoy Soy Crisps. With more protein than their rice-based counterparts, the soy crisps offer a light, airy snack. The Apple Cinnamon flavor boasts a slightly tangy apple-flavored first bite. Definitely have something to drink on hand, as the puffed, dried soy can leave you wanting some refreshment. Soy Crisps are also available in Zesty Barbeque, Tangy Sea Salt and Vinegar, Roasted Garlic and Onion, and Deep Sea Salted, as well as a few non-vegan flavors which we won't even mention.
Opinion Poll Results: Do You Eat Honey?
Last month we asked for your input on what can be considered one of the grayest areas of veganism:
Can an ethical vegan eat honey with a clear conscience? If there's "just a little bit" of honey in your breakfast cereal or energy bar, is that okay, or does vegan mean absolutely no animal products of any kind?
To which Dustin Rhodes of Washington, DC, replied:
"For me, bees fall into the category of sentient being; therefore, I don't eat honey. And if I did, how could I call myself a vegan? Veganism is defined, clearly, as a person who eschews all animal products. Donald Watson was a visionary, and he included bees in his moral framework. Why shouldn't we all?"
One of many respondents who shared this view, Mr. Rhodes was the only one to include Watson's view (and he's the one who coined the term "vegan"), which clarifies the issue with guidelines straight from the source's mouth.

How I Went Veg(an)
Here at VegNews, we like to shake it up. Making sure that our content is as fresh and fun as possible is one of our highest priorities, and that's why we're re-fashioning our "How I Went Veg" section. In the grand tradition of using interns as test dummies, current editorial intern Elizabeth Castoria gives us a brief glimpse of how she turned from your average, uninteresting vegetarian into the happy, snappy vegan she is today:
"At 17 it wasn't love, but it made me all sweaty and nervous and happy. His name was Justin, and we dated for two torrid months. He was handsome and vegan and when he asked me why I wasn't, I couldn't think of a reason. A vegetarian, yes, but were eggs and dairy really more important than having one more thing in common with my vegan heartthrob?
One California-summertime weekend we hiked up a coastal mountain. Once we reached the top I was starving, and had only thought to bring water, not food. As if on cue, Justin opened his backpack and revealed a perfectly composed picnic. Each bite was another prod towards veganismdelicious salad, roasted potatoes, and fresh fruit sealed the deal.
We've since broken up, but still go hiking together, and the food just keeps getting better. After nine years, I still can't think of a good reason to not be vegan."
Now it's your turn: Send us an email describing how you went from vegetarian to vegan for a chance to appear in VegNews. Please make sure to include "How I Went Veg" in the subject line, limit yourself to 500 words, and include your full name, city, and state.

VegNewsletter Coconut Craze Giveaway
Here at VegNews we love us some coconut, as you can read in Robin Robertson's food feature, Coconut Craze. Last month we asked for your favorite way to eat the tropical treat, and the responses varied greatlyfrom cracking open the raw coconut and drinking the water to including it in dishes from spicy to sweet and anywhere in between. While there is no shortage of ways to enjoy your coconut, there is only one reason to make it a staple in your kitchen: it's delicious!
Daphne Rice of Portland, Ore., was the lucky winner of our contest, with this simple, sublime answer:
"For a quick sweet treat, I dig my spoon into the peanut butter jar, then roll it in flaked coconut. It's an instant homemade healthy candy-bar-on-a-stick that feels almost sinful!"
For the efforts and coconut appreciation Daphne will receive a 12-bar box of Tree Huggin' Treats real live vegan candy bars, Crispy Cats.
