Veg in the News

Veggie Hot Dogs Go Down
Vegans and meat-eaters alike flocked to iLoveMikeLitt’s 1st ever Veggie Hot Dog Eating Contest on May 26 in Austin, Texas. More than 600 veggie dogs and buns met their ends, consumed by more than 40 contestants. One vegan stood out from the hungry crowd to be crowned the very first World Veggie Hot Dog Eating Champion, Colin "the Tim Duncan of Competitive Eating" Kalmbacher. His grand total for the day: 16.5 veggie dogs. Yikes!

Canadian Vegetarian Association Launches
Canadians now have a unifying vegetarian group, the CVA. Out and about vegetarians in the land of the maple leaf can declare themselves “Proudly Canadian, Loudly Vegetarian.” The group's goals include promoting vegetarianism throughout Canada and inspiring the formation of smaller, local vegetarian groups.

Hain Celestial Buys WhiteWave Foods
Hain Celestial is adding to their already popular Yves Veggie Cuisine line with the purchase of WhiteWave Foods, makers of tofu and meat-analog products. Brand names TofuTown and WhiteWave will now be brought to you by Hain Celestial, with products including baked, grilled and regular tofu, plus seitan and tempeh. Hain Celestial also owns Imagine Foods, Spectrum, Arrowhead Mills and Earth's Best, among many others.

Horse Meat-Action Alert!!
Owners of a horse slaughterhouse in Illinois have sued the state after the recent passage of a ban of horse slaughter for human consumption. Both Texas and Illinois recently passed horse slaughter bans, but the setback in Illinois shows the need for support of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act—an act which would ban the sale of horse meat and its transportation across borders for consumption.

Online Lollygagging

Veggies Make Music
Paul McCartney's new music video features a cameo by fellow veg Natalie Portman, thanks to his daughter, fashion designer Stella McCartney. Upon hearing that Natalie is a fan of Stella’s non-leather line of shoes, Paul rang her up and asked her to appear in his “Dance Tonight” video. It’s a small veg-world after all!

Hardy Har Har with Heart
Bizarro mastermind, activist and VN columnist Dan Piraro recently participated in a live, online chat with fellow cartoonists Bill Amend and Dave Coverly for the virtual version of esteemed newspaper The Washington Post. The sometimes silly, sometimes serious transcript is available online for those needing a dose of humor delivered in Piraro's typically smart and sassy style.

Product Review: FruitaBü Organic Smoooshed Fruit Apple Twirls

Reminiscent of that dried fruit that was rolled up (what was that called?) and stuffed into school lunchboxes way back when, this organic fruit snack by Stretch Island Fruit Co. is just as sweet and satisfying as its predecessor, if just a bit softer and a whole lot tastier. Try FruitaBü Organic Smoooshed Fruit Twirls in three tangy flavors: apple, grape and strawberry. Yum, yum and yum. The sweet snacks provide excellent fuel for VN staffers under deadline.

The Return of the Vegan Marshmallow Contest Winner

In our May VegNewsletter, we asked you to tell us your favorite way to eat marshmallows for a chance to win a gift box full of vegan marshmallows from Sweet & Sara. We were flooded with entries—folks do love s'mores, rocky road ice cream and flaming marshmallows straight from the campfire—so it was a tough decision. Our most creative entry came from Sky Chari, who presented a fun, easy and unique way to enjoy the gooey goodness. Here's her winning response:

So sweet it is …. Cut a large marshmallow in half (or just rip 'em, tiger) and delicately smoosh a perfectly ripe strawberry between said halves. Insert a toothpick to hold the wonderfulness together and pop it in the freezer for a bit. Meanwhile, melt some dark chocolate. Grab them bad boys out of the freezer, insert into the dark chocolate, let cool and then … well, yum.

Congratulations, Sky! A box of vegan marshmallows and s'mores that will hopefully inspire more lip-smacking recipes is on its way.

Order some Sweet & Sara marshmallows for yourself right now!

Opinion Poll: Would You Wear Used Leather?

It's not too late to share your ideas for a chance to appear in the super stylish September+October Fall Fashion issue of VegNews! Give us your two cents on the following question:

Would you wear 20-year-old leather shoes purchased from a vintage store knowing that you wouldn't directly be supporting the leather trade, or do you think vegan means vegan—no ifs, ands or buts?

Submit your response along with a high-resolution photo of yourself to Senior Editor Jennifer Pickens by Monday, June 18. (Sorry, only responses accompanied by a high-res photo will be considered.)
