V in the News:
Humane Society of the United States Names 25 Most Humane Cities
HSUS recently announced its first ever "Humane Index," which ranked America's 25 largest metropolitan areas for their compassion toward animals. Leading the humane pack is San Francisco (home of VegNews Magazine), which was found to be twice as humane as the average large US metro area. With its abundance of dog parks, vegetarian restaurants, and animal-friendly hotels, the city ranked number one in three of the 12 criteria and scored in the top ten in all but two measures. The study also looked at policies of regional lawmakers, the number of hunters and fur retailers in the area, and the conditions of companion animals, farm animals, wild animals, and animals used in entertainment.
And the least compassionate cities? Rounding out the bottom three were Dallas (#23), Cincinnati (#24) and Chicago (#25). Get with the program, people!

The Vegan Marshmallow Debacle
The Return of the Vegan Marshmallow
For most vegetarians, the thought of marshmallows has always had a particularly unpleasant connotation (they're made from hooves for cryin' out loud!). Then, a few years back, a handful of companies seemingly perfected the animal-free marshmallow to the delight of herbivores everywhere. We enjoyed them in hot cocoa, melted in s'mores over the camp fire, in rice krispy treats, and just straight out of the bag. Our veggie existence was completeor so we thought. Questions started arising about the origin of the gelatin used in these modern-day marshmallows. The company producing the gelatin, Emes, claimed that its product was kosher and vegan, but official lab tests proved otherwise. Overnight, most of the vegan marshmallow industry went belly-up.
But now, one of the original vegan marshmallow companies, New York City-based Sweet & Sara, recently announced that they have truly perfected the vegan marshmallow. Think fluffy white cubes of sweet bliss, in flavors such as vanilla, Mexican chocolate and toasted coconut (the VN staff favorite). These babies are competely addicting, and they're 100 percent vegan.
To celebrate the return of the vegan marshmallow, we're giving away a Sweet & Sara gift box full of vegan marshmallows to one lucky VegNewsletter winner. Simply tell us your favorite way to eat marshmallows. Responses should be limited to 50 words or less and emailed to newsletter@vegnews.com by May 31. The winning response will be announced in our June edition of the VegNewsletter.

Eat on!

Opinion Poll: Would You Wear Used Leather?
Attention VegNews fashionistas! The VN staff is hard at work stitching together our first annual "Fashion" issue, and we want your thoughts on this question:
Would you wear 20-year-old leather shoes purchased from a vintage store knowing that you wouldn't directly be supporting the leather trade? Or do you think vegan means veganno ifs, ands or buts?
This is your chance to share your opinions and possibly be included in this very special edition. Submit your response along with a high-resolution photo of yourself to Senior Editor Jennifer Pickens by May 31. (Sorry, only responses accompanied by a high-res photo will be considered.) Good luck!

VegNews Wins Maggie Award
We have great news from the VegNews Headquarters! VegNews was recently awarded our second Maggie Award, one of the most prestigious honors in the magazine industry. This year, we took home top honors for "Best Editorial," specifically for Publisher Joe Connelly's September+October 2006 Editor's Note entitled "You know it's hot out here for a wimp." In this piece, Joe criticized Al Gore for ignoring factory farming as one of the main culprits of global warming in the Oscar-winning film, "An Inconvenient Truth." To win a national award for what is a very controversial subject is just extraordinary, for both VegNews and the vegetarian movement.
More than 600 publishing professionals attended the awards ceremony and banquet in Los Angeles, honoring excellence in magazine and electronic publishing. This years Maggie competition received 1,700 entries, and VegNews was the only vegetarian publication honored. The VN team is thrilled to be recognized for our work in promoting the fabulous veg lifestyle.
