Chipotle Expands Garden Blend

The national burrito chain introduces a vegan filling at a New York City location.

By Liz Miller

Chipotle recently introduced a meat alternative at its Chelsea location in New York City. The burrito chain's first vegan option made its debut in October at its Dupont Circle location in Washington, DC. The new menu item—dubbed "garden blend"—was created by the restaurant and is made of wheat protein, soy protein, and fresh vegetables, then marinated in Chipotle's adobo sauce and grilled. The company is currently testing the new product in these two markets, and although there are currently no plans to expand the garden blend, a representative from Chipotle says feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so far. Consumers who want to see a vegan option on their local Chipotle menu can contact the company to voice their opinion.

Yes! I've been eating it at the Dupont location which is right by my office, and it is delicious. I've written Chipotle and asked them to bring it to more locations. I'm hoping it will become part of their standard menu, and the reception so far has been promising.

Just sent request to Chipotle that the vegan burrito be introduced into the Chicago market -- Chicago needs to adjust its reputation as a city of livestock gobblers. Thanks for the alert, VegNews! -- Katie

I am absolutely ecstatic about this. I just wrote to them to beg for it in my market. Great heads-up, VN!

You can just get the burritos w/out meat. their sauce is veg, which they highlight on their website. i guess it would be nice to have a protein source though... but black beans are high protein enough i reckon.

I've gone to a few blogs re: this new item and every time I see a non vegan saying, "Well, if you just get it without the meat, it's vegan." So what? You eat your carcass, maybe I want more than beans in my damn burrito. Shut up...

I've had the burrito like 20 times and every time it's been AMAZING! The "chicken" is delicious, and marinated in an awesome sauce. It's soooo good.

Why bother? The beans were so good. Who needs all that soy/gluten crap? BTW the pinto beans are NOT vegetarian.
