A recent New York Times exposé has revealed that South Dakota-based Beef Products Inc. is injecting its meat with ammonia to kill off E. coli and salmonella pathogens. Although the company claims that the chemical reduces deadly bacteria to “undetectable levels,” further reports show that the strains still exist even after the injections. Furthermore, the USDA is now allowing the company to sell the ammonia-laced, bacteria-positive beef to fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s and Burger King, and the federal school lunch program. Previously, the treated meat was only allowed to be sold to manufacturers of pet food.
