Last Thursday, the California Senate passed a bill banning sugar-sweetened sports drinks from public middle and high schools across the state. Sugary sports drinks such as Gatorade contain 56 grams of sugar per bottle, and research shows that children do not benefit more from the electrolytes in sports drinks than they do from those found in water and normal foods. The bill argues that making these drinks available in schools is contributing to the growing number of overweight and obese children in America. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sponsored of the bill and applauded the Senate for electing to remove sugary sports drinks from schools.
