Legislators Going Veg

Three California legislators are taking the VegWeek challenge and giving up meat for a week.

By Brooke Still

The first annual Los Angeles VegWeek kicks off this Saturday, July 11, and has not only gained support from California vegans, but from a few California legislators as well. As a part of the celebration, Compassion Over Killing—the event’s sponsor—encourages participants to pledge a week of vegetarianism. Congressman Brad Sherman (pictured above), Assemblymember Pedro Nava, and Assemblymember Ted Lieu have all joined the efforts. All three legislators have reputations of advocating for environmental standards and animal protection. Assemblymember Nava said, “This event will help to raise awareness and encourage a more compassionate diet and lifestyle.”

These legislators are three of the greatest advocates for animals and the environment, consistently spearheading bills that promote animal welfare and environmental standards. They also value health and quality of life for all their constituents, and so they are the perfect candidates to endorse this important event. For more details on Los Angeles' first VegWeek, and the kick-off party on Sunday, July 11, at which both Assemblymembers Nava and Lieu will be speaking, visit LAVegWeek.com. Lunch will be provided, and chef Chloe Coscarelli will be doing a delicious cookie demo for dessert!

I can't wait for the kick-off party Sunday! Not only is there going to be yummy (and free!) vegan food, but more importantly we'll get a chance to thank these pioneer legislators for all the hard work they do for other animals' rights. Let's show them how truly important their work is and how much the veg community appreciates them by showing up in droves! Oh, and did I mention the delicious food? :)

Recently, Brad Sherman stated that those on the Turkish flotilla bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza should be prosecuted as terrorists. How nice it would be if Rep. Sherman had the same compassion for Palestinians and peaceful humanitarians as he has for Israelis and professes to have for animals.
