In his new New York Times “Opinionator” column, Mark Bittman analyzes the fine line between companion animals and animals we use for food, questioning how farm animals can be treated in inhumane ways while people can be punished by law for mistreating their companion animals. Additionally, he equates eating excessive amounts of meat to the idea that farm animals don’t feel pain. Bittman writes, “We should be treating animals better and raising fewer of them; this would naturally reduce our consumption. All in all, a better situation for us, the animals, the world.” Bittman is also an advocate for Meatless Mondays and sustainable agriculture.
