COK Takes on Dunkin

The animal-rights group is challenging the doughnut mecca to make doughnuts vegan.
By Kailey Harless
As the slogan says, America runs on Dunkin. Compassion Over Killing, a Washington, DC-based animal advocacy organization, recognizes that, and thinks America needs to run on Dunkin Donuts, veganized. With an estimated 6,400 stores in the US alone, Dunkin is providing everyone with plenty of egg- and milk-laden dough. Little do consumers know that the eggs in all 52 varieties of doughnuts come from hens in factory farms, where living space for animals is minimal and harmful. COK is pushing Dunkin to revamp its menu and supply vegan options for the masses. Join the Dunkin Cruelty campaign by heading to COKs site and contacting Dunkin headquarters. Doughnt delicious, sweet, ethical doughnuts sound like the kind of fuel on which Americans should run?

Dunkin' Donuts, you make wonderful products that America adores - please make them even BETTER by offering vegan menu items and eliminating egg and dairy use! Give us vegan donuts and we will buy them by the millions! I personally know dozens of people who for ethical, environmental, or health reasons do not eat eggs and dairy, but who would LOVE to buy a delicious Dunkin' Donut. There are thousands upon thousands of us - hear us! If you won't do it to end animal cruelty, do it to expand your customer base! A vegan French Cruller would be perfect, oh and I'll take my coffee with soy milk! Visit http://dunkincruelty.com and send DD a message today!

do you realize that dunkin donuts doesn't care about the compassion of animals? by then making a product suitable for vegans, or even environmentally aware people, they would be doing it for MONEY. not for the reason any of you stopped the use of animal products. DD would still sell donuts made with hormone ridden eggs and milk. why would you give money to this company? if you really want a vegan donut, make your own or support a local business that actually CARES about why they are doing it.

YES! vegan donuts re: "no" regardless of why Dunkin' would opt to offer vegan stuff, it'd be better for animals if they did. that's what this is about--the animals.

It would be so easy to leave out the powdered milk in donuts to make them vegan. The customers wouldn't even be able to taste the difference. The benefit for Dunkin' Donuts would be a ton of new customers.

I pass four Dunkin Donuts stores every day, and will continue to pass them by until I can get soy milk in my coffee and a donut without animal ingredients.

This is such a great campaign! I've already sent my email!

i have considered the fact that if dunkin donuts went vegan i would likely get fat. worth it? i think so.

to the person who said DD would still be a big evil corporation, this is true, but considering what huge purchasing power they have, being america's biggest donut supplier, the benefits to the animals of them going vegan would be tremendous. if we are striving for a cruelty-free world then that means everything needs to change, not just small mom n pop operations that we agree with.

If you're vegan, generally it's bc of animal rights. It doesn't make sense to me to support a FAST FOOD chain which will still use animal products, even if they create vegan donuts. You're still supporting the chain, hence still giving them money so they can use animal products. I don't see the point behind this. I wouldn't do this for McDonalds or any other FAST FOOD chain.

I definitely agree it's important to support small ethical businesses, and it's wonderful to see the ever increasing vegan options out there. I think that things are imperfect, and in the long run if dunkin' donuts offered vegan options, and the company saw there was a demand then it creates more awareness for veganism in the non-vegan world we live in. I don't see them carrying vegan options as a solution to the problem, but rather one initial step amongst many in a snowball effect toward greater animal compassion.

There are plenty of non-animal by-products that can be replaced that will have plenty of flavor. Please use vegan products!

In my opinion (btw, lifelong resident of state in which Dunkin Donuts makes its headquarters) Dunkin Donuts is absolutely grotesque! In my observation, I'd say it caters to a certain "townie" population that has NO understanding of or interest in ethical treatment of animals. Dunkin Donuts coffee is TERRIBLE and the company WILL NOT OFFER SOYMILK. I steer clear of D.D. If I can't patronize a local independent cafe, I go to Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts is a trashy townie fast food chemical laden sugar festival. Yuck.

I would not go out of my way to buy anything at Dunkin' Donuts unless ALL of their donuts were vegan, and that only to show my support if they actually did it. I need to look after my health. And yeah, I think it would be better to focus on a smaller chain... remember the Boca campaign? That was great. Boca was already vegetarian. Tackling an organization like Dunkin' Donuts will be tough with only one chain campaign success under COK's belt. But I will support it because the campaign what they've already chosen, and there's no turning back. And it would still be great if Dunkin' Donuts did not use eggs or dairy in its donuts.
