This Week's Must-Have

Dandies Vegan Marshmallows

From campfires to casseroles, the marshmallow makes its triumphant return to the throne of culinary kitsch.

Honestly, we didn’t realize how much we missed traditional-style marshmallows. After a few Dandies though, the floodgates opened and memories of marshmallow past came rushing back. These fluffy, sweet, air-puffed pillows instantly impressed our taste buds with their spot-on flavor and undeniable marshmallow texture. Everything once stripped of its disappointing gelatin-counterpart now beckons to be Dandie-fied: sweet potato casserole, hot cocoa, crisped-rice treats, ambrosia salad, and quite possibly the most important—s’mores. Even straight-up roasting over an open flame hits the mark. Pop a few right from the bag or recreate your favorite ‘mallow-infused dish. Basically, the take-home message with Dandies is that any way you want them, that’s the way you need them.

And guess what? We have two huge bags of Dandies to give away to one very lucky VegNews reader! Simply tell us your favorite way to eat marshmallows, and we'll randomly draw one winner. Good luck!

I love them straight out of the bag so much they never make it into a cup of hot cocoa, never mind smores or rice crispy treats. That said, they are fantastic in both and I love them that way, if someone can pry them out of my powerdery white fingers.

Toasted golden brown on the outside, crispy on the edges but no char, gooey on the inside; achieved by patiently holding it on a stick over the coals of a small campfire, around which friends are telling funny stories, while on a backpacking trip in the mountains.

After a bubble bath in soft PJ's with fuzzy socks in front of a fireplace with your love, marhmallows roasted in the fire on long sticks and then andwiched between choc grahams, with Louis Armstrongs' It's a Wonderful World playing and very cold champagne.

A modified fruit cobbler - children (by chronological age and by heart) love this . . . Take fresh, frozen, or canned fruit. Put in baking pan. Cover with marshmallows. Put in 350 degree oven until fruit is warmed. If marshmallows aren't brown enough, put under broiler for few minutes, watching carefully

vegan marshmallows are best right out of the bag!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 11:53AM By Mary

I recently finished a bag of Dandies. I added them to brownies and soy ice cream sundaes, made smores for the first time since I went vegan, but most of them were eaten straight out of the bag! They are so delicious!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 12:05PM By Amy

Definitely rice krispy treats. I haven't had one of those in ages! I've made them with corn syrup but it's not the same.

Toasted over a campfire until golden brown (no burned bits, please)

Posted: Aug 11 2009 13:09PM By Jimmy Arcade

Very well done, after having caught the marshmallow on fire, over a serious camp-fire, and eaten right off the stick, followed shortly by a nice piece of organic dark chocolate. Much chewing and savoring, as the chocolate melts with the heat of the mallow and the warmth of my mouth, turning into a medley of delicious goodness.

fire-roasted to perfection - crispy golden brown on the outside, all melty-gooey on the inside. Yum!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:11PM By Krysten

This post on favorite ways to eat marshmallows reminded me an interesting childhood snack I had at summer camp. I believe it was called a "walking salad" and was made by taking a large piece of leaf lettuce and smearing it with peanut butter then sprinkling on chocolate chips and miniature marshmallows; it was then rolled up sort of like a burrito. At the time I had no idea what gelatin was, and wasn't even a vegetarian for that matter, but now that I'm older and wiser =) I'd love to try a vegan version of this creation!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:12PM By jennifer

krispie treats! smores! in hot cocoa on a cold day!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:13PM By Kim

Smores!!!!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:36PM By Gina

Maybe I'm a freak but....I eat them straight outta the bag. Then again, I was probably Peeps' biggest fan until I became vegan. Although, if I were to get a bag, I would try and cover them in colored sugar to make vegan peeps. Or, I might just have to try the rice krispie treats. Or have friends over for s'mores. Ah, the possibilities are amazing, I loooooooved marshmallows!!!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:36PM By Astrid

Vegan peanutbutter rice crispy treats!!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:36PM By Jamie

My favorite way to eat them is to stuff a few chocolate chips in the center, and then roast it on a campfire! You get a warm, gooey marshmallow with a crisp skin, filled with warm gooey chocolate, it's fabulous!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:37PM By domestipithecus

I like 'em straight out of the bag!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:45PM By Nicole Fisher

I have only had marshmallows once since I became vegan, and that time I had (lots of) smores. Right now hot chocolate sounds really good even if it is early for the hot part.

Over a camp fire, of course!

Only miss marshmallows when I'm having hot chocolate. . .

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:56PM By Meg Worden

When I was little my family moved to Alaska so my dad could work on the pipeline. My grandfather in Louisiana used to send me envelopes full of marshmallows. They would arrive smashed flat and sticky with love. I ate them straight while reading his letters. I would definitely eat Dandies straight out of the bag with my seven year old vegan son. (maybe while reading VegNews!)

Posted: Aug 11 2009 15:59PM By Jenny

I loved s'mores before going vegan, but I bet Dandies could allow me to re-experience my childhood!

Roasted marshmallows and chocolate inside a waffle cone, instead of between gram crackers is my new favorite

Posted: Aug 11 2009 16:24PM By Sammy

My son and I love to make s'mores whether camping or at home. I would also like to make the holiday sweet potato casserole using vegan marshmallows. I always try to get us a back when we go camping with friends or Boy Scouts. They are really good roasted until black over a campfire. I also love them in hot chocolate. There are so many ways to enjoy marshmallows.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 16:37PM By brandi

you really can't beat s'mores :) and rice krispie treate wouldn't exist without them!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 16:38PM By Danielle

I love to have marshmallows with s'mores! Also if I put them in the microwave and heat them up then spread them on bread or other things! :)

S'mores!!!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 16:55PM By Laura

I like to eat them straight outta the bag!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 16:59PM By Meghan

I take a graham cracker, spread a layer of PB, then a thin layer of a chocolate spread/frosting, and put a dandy (or two) on top. Perfectly-sized treat! I've taken them to work or just had them on hand at home and, either way, they instantly disappear (and at work you have the satisfaction of amazing co-workers with the 'vegan-ness').

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:13PM By Robin

I dip mine in warm chocolate. when cooled, I have chocolate covered marshmallows!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:13PM By Maureen

I like to eat them right off my hubbies very vegan belly.

on top of seep potato pie, with a little brown crusting on the top from the oven.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:15PM By Amy

My 5 year old and like them straight from the bag. He only recently had his 1st marshmallow. It is hard to find vegan ones!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:15PM By Sarah

I love them toasted. Perfectly browned. The only way to eat them.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:23PM By Scott Bennett Walker

My favorite way to eat marshmallows is melting them in my mug of hot cocoa.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:25PM By Jamie

I'm pretty traditional with my Dandies - I eat them from the bag, roasted on a stick over a campfire, on top of sweet potatoes, or in some vegan hot chocolate. Dandies are SO good!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:33PM By Mary

Dandies Dandies, how do I love thee? On a stick over the fire Or in a rice crispy? Alas I never get that far For once the bag is opened You're gobbled up as you are!

Toasted to perfection over a campfire.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:42PM By Da'Ves Malone

Before i became a vegetarian i had always ate marshmallows. was thinking of find a recipe but it's always hard to find the right one. I love making brownies, hot chocolate, ice cream, rice krispy treats, and popcorn balls with masrshmallows. However what i miss the most is the Smores.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 17:45PM By robby

i love roasting them over a camp fire. i used to be so good at getting them perfectly browned, but didn't really mind if they caught on fire for a second. i'll definitely have to try these things on my next camping trip!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 18:16PM By Jeanne de G

I have a book called The Gallery of Regrettable Foods (hilarious book) that has a section on Famous Chefs cooking with Marshmallows. Precious, pretentious, served with doilies. None sound as good as the s'mores, toastings, squishings, and right-out-o-the-bag eatings posted here! The perfect way? How ever you get 'em to your mouth!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 18:20PM By Jenny Wheeling

i am pretty complicated in a deconstructed kind of way: dandies in a bowl with dark chocolate chips on top, chex cereal, pecans or cashews; then microwave until gooey. top with fresh fruit and soy whip topping. pick apart with a spoon and my fingers...lusciousness plus.

Posted: Aug 11 2009 18:25PM By Nancy

It's not HOW I eat them, but WHO I eat them with that makes them special. How about with my two daughter's girl scout troops sitting around a campfire, singing songs and making "smores"...it's pure heaven!

Posted: Aug 11 2009 18:26PM By Larisa

Marshmallows bring back too many memories, and I have been without for so long, I cannot choose only one way.... Smores have the strongest memory, girlscouts. But I love rice krispy treats as well as right from the bag to my mouth! :-)

Posted: Aug 11 2009 22:54PM By Christine Wohlleben

Hot from the campfire coals of course... but with a twist. As soon as you take the perfectly browned marshmallow off the stick, put a piece of organic chocolate inside so it melts. Oohey, gooey, Delicious!

Posted: Aug 12 2009 00:22AM By Wayne Shepherd

May be unoriginal but right off the stick from the campfire, no chocolate or crackers needed!

I make microwave s'mores. Just put a Dandy between some graham crackers and add a piece of dark chocolate. Zap for 30 seconds. So yummy!

Posted: Aug 12 2009 06:21AM By Amber

Roasted over a campfire on the end of a stick after a long day of hiking and setting up camp while watching one of my friends play guitar. I can't wait to share with all my non-vegan friends so they can see what they are missing out on! :)

Posted: Aug 12 2009 06:22AM By Stephanie

Putting marshmallows in a marshmallow shooter and then trying to catch them with your mouth while they are in the air is pretty awesome. But otherwise heated with some kettle corn is amazing because of the sweet and salty combo.

Posted: Aug 12 2009 06:35AM By Emilie

I make "nice crispies" for my boyfriend. He's not vegan but I am, and I love when he likes my vegan baked goods. He likes them better than regular rice crispy squares!

Posted: Aug 12 2009 06:36AM By Lisanne Jones

Roasted on a stick over an open campfire! Mmmm! My daughter likes to make her marshmallows into "taffy."

Posted: Aug 12 2009 09:21AM By Grace

My Mum's delicious homemade fudge recipe calls for marshmallow fluff, and it was the best I've ever tasted. I miss it, and I bet Dandies would melt perfectly to re-create that childhood treat!

SHARING THESE WITH CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY IN COUNTRIES WHERE THEY LIVE ON ONE DOLLAR A DAY LIKE CAMBODIA. THESE PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT A MARSHMALLOW IS OR CHILDREN ON THE STREETS LIVING IN GARBAG HEAPS IN GUATEMALA. IF WE COULD ONLY ORGANIZE ALL VEGAN COMPANIES TO HAVE AN INTErNATIONAL FOOD DAY WHERE CHILDREN THAT HAVE NOT THE ABUNDANCE WE DO PARTAKE OF YUMMY VEGAN FOODS

Posted: Aug 12 2009 11:44AM By gisela

s'mores!

Posted: Aug 12 2009 11:45AM By Michelle

Roasted over a fire (with some tasty crispy burnt bits) -usually they don't even make it onto the chocolate and graham crackers! Of course, added to some sweet potatoes, yams, and pumpkin is always a delicious treat! Dang, now I really want some marshmallows!!

Posted: Aug 12 2009 11:48AM By Tiffany

I don't actually and my kids just drool when everyone is around the campfire and I can't find a local substitute - no longer now! I can't wait to try them and let my girls savor the love of the marshmallow and feel peace in knowing that they can "fit in" and support our vegan lifestyle. So I wish I could tell you how I enjoy them but I think I would enjoy using them in a super duper rich brownie madness dessert (after the kids are in bed so I don't have to share)

Posted: Aug 12 2009 11:52AM By Michele

Smores (by the fire, grill, or microwave...I'd even heat them up with a match if that was all I had...love um)!

Pre-vegan I loved roasting them over the campfire. And I mean roasting! I always set them on fire, waited until the whole thing blackened, blew it out, and then proceeded to eat it all off the stick in one sticky bite. I'd love to try vegan marshmallows.

Gotta love 'em the classic way: toasted over a flame and made into sticky, messy, delicious S'mores. Yum! So glad to have this option again!

Lightly toasted, on an autumn night.

I am an equal opportunity marshmallow eater. I do not discriminate against any dessert in which marshmallows are an ingredient! :)

In hot coco, real chocolate coco

I don't eat marshmallows often, but when I do, I pop them straight from the bag. Makes me feel about seven years old again, when we went camping and ate about half the bag before even thinking about smores. Or I remember drinking hot chocolate, the kind from those single-serve packets, that come with the tiny marshmallows that have already melted by the time the cocoa is cool enough to drink, so I'd add the giant ones, which ended up getting all creamy on the outside, seeing as they were in a hot drink...

I love marshmallows. I can eat them any way, but my two favorite ways are roasted over an open fire and on a sandwich with peanut butter (marshmallow cream is great too).
