About 80,000 students in Baltimore will have only vegetarian options for their Monday lunches. Baltimore City Public Schools is the first school system in the US to adopt Meatless Mondays. The American Meat Institute criticized this decision and said students should be able to choose to eat whatever they want. However, the initiative is garnering much praise elsewhere. PETA is giving the school system a Proggy Award for Most Progressive School District of 2009. The Meatless Monday campaign began in 2003, with the goal to reduce meat consumption by 15 percent to improve public health and the health of the planet.
